Who would hide ya?
My, oh my, here's the
cute Elijah.

Here he is, recovering from a traumatic birth, and all wrapped up. But he's improving fast, and tomorrow I'm going to see him!

What I've just read

Anne Bronte's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' - I'm a bit Bronted-out at the moment, to be honest, having recently re-read Wuthering Heights (fabulous, but really Leonard Cohen in Victorian-novel form). Then I tried Charlotte's 'Villette' and was BORED, so BORED. So I gave up with that. Then I thought, oh well, try another sister. How handy that there are three. And I couldn't put this one down. Brilliant love story with a comPLETEly predictable ending, but a few twists and turns along the way, and so many naughty boys in it to secretly like. I'm onto 'The Hunger Games' now, just to see what it's like. I have to say, Bronte, it's not.
Khaled Hosseini's 'The Kite Runner' - I've re-read this because I'm teaching it soon. It's been a long time since a book made me cry; I'm just not the type who uses a wet Kleenex as a bookmark, which is perhaps a character trait one should be grateful for. But Hosseini's story about a boy who betrays his childhood friend, then betrays him some more, and then some more, did for me. I can't believe it's a debut novel (spit) - it's beautifully written, although once or twice I thought, you don't need to tell me that, no DON'T TELL ME, I REALISED ANYWAY! A good lesson for any new writer - trust your reader. The film has nothing on the book, by the way.
Andrew Miller's 'Pure' - Well, if it's belly-laughs you're looking for, don't come here, because it's set in a graveyard from start to finish and that's never been a recipe for a listing under 'Humour' in the Amazon charts. But it's brilliant. Just before the French Revolution, an engineer goes for a job interview and instead of being asked to build a bridge (he has that on his CV) he is asked to demolish a graveyard and church. There is nothing about Graveyard Demolishing in his Engineer's Handbook, so he has to find a way himself. There's a love interest (not with one of the graveyard inhabitants, you'll be glad to know) and the writer certainly knows how to drum up a bit of atmosphere. That's just a skeleton summary for you, of corpse. Read it!
