Reasons why not to read 'The Slap'

Am just logging in from a library in Ambleside, Cumbria, to say that I agree with the negative comments about 'The Slap' which followers left on the last post.  Yes, it was an interesting story (eg what would happen if you slapped someone else's child?)  But the characters are horrible and self-absorbed and immoral and you don't feel any sympathy for them.  And it seems as though the author thinks every now and again, 'Aha, at least 3 pages without any steamy sex.  I must put some in, and the cruder the better.'  And as if he thinks, every now and again, 'Aha, at least 3 lines and no one has said the 'c' word.  I must rectify this immediately.'

I apologise if you bought it on my early recommendation.  Big time.

More about Cumbria soon .... the gingerbread ... the rain ... the gingerbread ... the rain ... the gingerbread ... the rain ...

  1. Oh, right. Certainly won't buy it, then.

Sorry we didn't manage to keep our rain up here. There was so much that it must have flowed south. Still, gingerbread. Not all bad.

  2. Fran, the coments on Amazon put me off, and you have confirmed them. I shan't bother with this novel. Thanks for the advice!

  3. Are people not self absorbed and prone to swear all the time? Or is that just the people I work with?

  5. Come home--all is forgiven! But PLEASE DON'T recommend any more books before reading them!! It can be expensive for your followers.

  6. When I was a kid it was nothing to get a clip around the earhole from anyone, if you were doing something you shouldn't. It was usually followed by,'I'll tell yer mother when I see her,' which added an extra scary something and you hoped they wouldn't. They usually didn't and you never mentioned the clip in case she felt it necessary to add to the punishment. It was how life was back then. Everyone knew whose kid you were so you were very careful about what you got up to. No phones, but the jungle telegraph was amazing.

  7. It sounded like a pretty good premise, but no I wouldn't care for it based on the points you bring up. Hope you are enjoying your gingerbread!

  9. fishducky - sorry, sorry, grovel grovel grovel. How can I make it up to you? Can I tell you that 'The Year the Gypsies Came' is a really good book that I've actually FINISHED and loved? Or maybe 'Room'? Or 'Trespass' by Rose Tremain - also brilliant. Grovel grovel grovel.

It was recommended to me too (not by you, so you're off the hook) so I downloaded a sample to my kindle. That was enough for me ;-) Enjoyed "Room" (rather harrowing but intriguing) and also "Trespass" so feel free to recommend other books as we seem to have similar tastes. Have you tried the gingerbread, by the way? It might be rather good. Jo :-0

  11. Didn't like The Slap either. Shame, because there's a really good story to be told on that theme. Try 'Skippy Dies' - I enjoyed it and we seem to share similar tastes in books and cake. And it features Dough-nuts.
